Royston Tan: Father

Another masterpiece from Royston Tan

  1. Poignant. Reminds me of the best European documentaries. (it's supposed to be a compliment :))

  2. but this one of course is acted out, splendidly. Royston has an absolute control over the editing and splicing, leaving the actors sometimes at the disadvantage of not being able to show any emotion that would last more than 2-3 sec on the screen. In his case, though, it translates into an advantage of sorts - visually haunting and memorable "mood" that is almost palpable....

  3. You're right of course. Sorry, I wasn't precise in what I wanted to say. I meant the mode of shooting and editing reminded me of European documentaries. Many renowned European movie directors actually started as documentarists, which carried over later on to their movies. There is is this raw authenticity in Tan's movies that makes you forget it's acted out - just great!
