Tsai Ming-Liang: The Wayward Cloud

Well, an interesting Hong Kong kitschy musical about pornography, loneliness and watermelons (set in Taiwan) has been released in France (and with the usual Gallic impeccable taste a website has been created). The film itself is a usual Tsai fare - meaning, long sequences of life in real-time, no cuts, no editing, all seeimingly irrational actions that are easily explained if only we were told something. But then again life is just like that, we keep guessing the motivations of other people without ever really knowing what or whether to believe. The musical numbers are a "must-see" for all John Waters/Busby Berkeley fans (you know who you are). The sex scenes with explicit cum shots are very, very well-done. So if you care about three films in one (porn, musical and Tsai Ming Liang's existential wanderings) - go see it! If you only care about one or the other, embrace yourself.

Here is the site: Le Saveur de Pasteque (The Taste of Watermelon).

I know the site is in French, but it is so well designed, that it would be a pity if you would not explore all of its offerings, like film trailer, extracts (hidden in Multimedia section), photos, music and screen savers.

Those who wish to see the film can make an appointment to see it on my 50" plasma TV in Dolby 5.1 sound chez moi

  1. "But then again life is just like that, we keep guessing the motivations of other people without ever really knowing what or whether to believe."
Isn't this a display of a terrible lack of trust in other people and their motivations? It's assuming the worst in people, isn't it? I don't think I could live like that. I always assume the best in people, even if life proves me wrong on many counts. Even so, I refuse to change!
