Love/Hate relationship
by Valera
Isn't it strange how the Middle East teenage population wears American T-shirt and yet is staunchly anti-American? They drink Mountain Dew, but ready to spill the infidels' blood. They adore Hollywood movies, but ready to kill any American. They would love to have a Cadillac and a pool and a digital camera and a plasma TV and use Internet, and yet, and yet, and yet. Is it irony? Is it oblivion? Is it desperation?
It may be envy plus religious/ideological indoctrination. I remember a time when young people in Poland embellished their rooms with empty Coca Cola cans (symbols of American imperialism after all ;)) and at the same time went to anti-American rallies venting their hatred and frustration. It needn't have been frustration with the American lifestyle - but that's how it was chanelled by the political/ideological gurus of those times. They exploited the young people's yearning for a better life. Wasn't it pure cynicism? Anna
