It's like travel in time - going back to the Middle Ages when self-flagellation and self-mutilation were common practices. Some theorists say that these practices have something to do with pent-up sexual desires which get released during such spectacles. Whatever the underpinning they are quite shocking to our liberal European minds (and bodies :)). Nevertheless, such niches exist and they are potential sources of thoroughbred religious extremists, who in their sexual/religious ecstasy will be ready to wipe out the corrupt Western world, which abhors committment to anything (let alone religion).
