Egypt: The Sphinx
Again, the loneliness of that creature disturbs. His nose has been destroyed by a cannon as a punishment (which may be good as the smell of horses, donkeys and camels all around him is overwhelming). The Turkish, British and French soldiers used it as a target for shooting. The nearby temple is strangely disconnected from it. The light show at night has all the cultured taste of the Japanese brides in Disneyland. Not an ancient wonder of the world, yet very, very haunting.
Sphinx is symbolic of mystery, isn't it? Sphinxian - means unreadable, mysterious, detached, Godlike to me. Sphinx appeals to one's imagination even when one hasn't seen it with one's very own eyes ... You have seen it with your very own eyes and it does appear haunting to you. It confirms my personal impressions of Sphinx - always nice to know one isn't completely out of one's mind :)
ReplyDeleteSince no one knows for sure Sphinx' s functional role in the Pyramid complex, it could be anything indeed. Survival skills come to mind, protective power, but since we do not even know from what angle to look at him, or what other smaller pieces may have accompanied him - it will be wooing us with his indecipherability.
